Good Morning Delmarva with David Galeone Graphic

Buying gifts for me can be difficult

June 28th, 2021

I have everything I need

Before each Christmas, Father's Day or Birthday I get asked "the question" what do you want? I always say something like a 30' Grady White with twin 300's or a couple million in 50's! No, I always say that I don't need anything or want anything...I have everything that I need.

But I am also the type of person once I make up my mind that I really want something I normally will just get it. I don't consider myself an impulse buyer but...

This year I knew what I wanted from Santa

This year when Erica asked what she could get me from her and the kids I actually had been eyeing up something for awhile. I have a few different knives that depending on what I am doing that I use. But I wanted to get a really nice knife that was made for salt water conditions. My other knives kept getting small rust stains that I would have to clean or polish out.  And even another one of my special fishing knives that I had purchased wasn't holding up that good.

So doing some research on knives that are made for salt water fishing one kept standing out to me - Boye. Boye Knives are specially made for the salt water environment. They also aren't overly heavy. That was another problem I have with some of my other knifes. They are either big and heavy or just a small knife that is next to useless when you really need to cut something substantial.

After reading about how Boye knives had been made in the USA since 1971 and are made to resist corrosion and stay extremely sharp I knew this was the knife for me. David Boye, has not only been making knives since the 1970's he even published a book Step by Step Knifemaking: You Can Do It! and has sold over 200,000 copies.

I really love(d) this knife

I was really happy with this knife. I mean I carried it with me everywhere. It was so light, so sharp...I didn't leave home without it. I told everyone at work, my family, and the guys I fish with about it. I was always showing it off.

Well you all know I love to fish! Our first trip offshore this year I had my trusty Boye knife on my belt and I started to climb up the outrigger and I felt something at my side and then heard the sound!

FISH- I lost my knife

That sound...was of my knife going overboard and well I don't think that was the F word I said either. I was disgusted. I mean sick to my stomach. I had never ever had this happen before with any of my other knives. I couldn't even say anything other than I don't believe this. I have no idea what happened other than the knife popped off of my side and was gone.

Several times that day I joked around about opening or cutting something and that I would be happy to do it if I had my knife. I was still kind of disgusted...I didn't even want to tell Erica or the kids I had lost my knife that they got for me.

What does all of this have to do with Delmarva, or shopping local?

It doesn't really. This company is from Arizona and the knife was ordered using their website. But this company screams of a small business success story. So much of our group is focused on small businesses and after reading their story about how this small business was started it felt close to home even if it wasn't. Now Boye has exploded to make several of the top selling boat knives. I knew I had to share this story with everyone here.

Outstanding reviews - Outstanding product - Outstanding service

Look at the number of outstanding reviews on their knives and the company in general. See how focused they are on customer service. That is something we have discussed so many times on our group and I am a firm believer that makes all the difference in any business.

It is easy for a consumer to sing praises and go on and on about how great something is when it is going good. It is easy for a company to say thank you for leaving a wonderful review, or respond back to someone leaving positive feedback. But when things go wrong or something isn't perfect how a company responds really shows you what the company is all about. While on their website and reading all about this business I loved their story.

Read their guarantee: (copied from their website) We are customer friendly and want you to have a totally satisfying experience with your Boye knife for its entire life. We will repair or replace any knife which has a problem due to our materials or workmanship. If a knife needs repair because of overly hard or improper use, we can often restore it to good working order, and usually at no charge. Having said that, we encourage a respectful relationship with your Boye knife, so that it can serve you faithfully for many years.

If you are not happy for any reason when you receive your knife, you may return it for a prompt refund.

I sent them an email

I didn't expect them to really do anything. I figured I would get the typical canned response back thank you for contacting us, and then the we are sorry to hear this. Maybe a small discount on the purchase of a new knife.

I really don't like to complain and can't explain how the knife came off. Did the clip break, was it lose, did I hit something on the outrigger? I really didn't know and that is exactly what I said in my email to them. I did want to let them know how much I really did love that knife and that I was going to purchase another one but wanted to see if they would offer any sort of promotional code or discount that may take the sting off a little.

To my surprise what I got back was a really nice personal email from Debbie Boye from Boye knives. She asked me for a bit more information on my knife and wanted to let me know that they would send out a replacement knife to me. I emailed her right back thanking her and telling her that customer service like this is almost non existent today.

Just as promised Debbie emailed me a tracking number letting me know my new knife is on the way. I think I will be purchasing another one of these knives soon. This is a really fantastic company and while it isn't a local company to Delmarva it sure feels like one to me.
