Summerfield Trails are Ready

By Michelle Nelson

April 16, 2024

It’s time to explore! Work is just about complete on new trails in Snow Hill and the public is invited to the kick-off celebration for Celebrate Trails Day on Saturday, April 27. Summerfield Trails in Snow Hill are about three miles long and easy to follow. They are labeled A (.9 miles), B (1.4 miles) and C (1 mile) and are long enough for hiking, exploring, running, and enjoying nature. They will eventually connect to the Wildlands Trail, currently under construction, linking Snow Hill to Shad Landing State Park in Pocomoke.

I love the outdoors and as soon as I saw the trails advertised on the adventure blog Delmarva Trails and Waterways, I told my husband about them and we were off to investigate. He is training for a backpacking trip and the trails provided a nice spot to hike while he wore his heavy pack. The Eastern Shore is known for its lack of elevation, but there is a little up and down to enjoy. We saw wood set out for one small bridge crossing which has since been completed.

While the trails are mainly done, there is still a little left to finish, so you might encounter  heavy equipment and sawing still taking place. Be on the lookout and pay attention to any posted signs. For current information, call the State Forest office at 410-632-3732.

Celebrate Trails Day will begin at 9:30 am. at the Lower Shore Land Trust Office, 100 River Street, in downtown Snow Hill. After opening remarks, visitors will walk a short distance through town to Byrd Park where local officials and dignitaries will speak at the pavilion. Area organizations will be hand, too, with information about recreational opportunities in Worcester County. By 10:30, the plan is for guests to walk the two blocks down Dighton Avenue to the trailhead. Visitors can also park directly at Byrd Park; there is no parking at the trail entrance. As you head down Dighton Avenue, you’ll pass through a neighborhood, see a church and cemetery, then the trail.

While the trails will no doubt be enjoyed by adults, these trails in particular seem like a perfect spot to take children. They are long enough to run and play, yet not so long that kids will grow tired. In this age of too many screens, taking kids to explore will go a long way in helping their health as well as helping them develop a love of nature.
After checking out Summerfield, spend some time at Byrd Park and be sure to look across the water for the goats on the tiny island! Then have lunch at one of Snow Hill’s restaurants.

This event Is being organized by Maryland’s Coast and supported by partner organizations such as
