NASA Rocket Launch & Solar Eclipse -

Sun Outdoors Chincoteague Bay

When: Monday, April 8th,  2:40 PM – 4:05 PM

Planning on attending the Wallops Flight Facility’s Rocket Launch? Stay with Sun Outdoors Chincoteague Bay and immerse yourself in an unforgettable experience.

On April 8, 2024, during the solar eclipse, three sounding rockets will launch from Wallops Island as part of the Apophis (APEP) mission.

The views from Sun Outdoors Chincoteague Bay are simply out of this world… literally!

 From Sun Outdoors Chincoteague Bay's campground, you'll have spectacular views of NASA Wallops Flight Facility’s Launch Pad.

Gather with fellow campers at the bayfront promenade and indulge in some of the BEST seats for rocket launches at NASA Wallops Flight Facility.


Here are the details for the launch:

Mission: Apophis 2 (APEP 2)

Vehicle: 3 Black Brant IX sounding rockets

Date: April 8, 2024

Time: 2:40 p.m. - 4:05 p.m. EDT. Rockets are scheduled to launch approximately 45 minutes apart.

Location: Wallops Flight Facility, Virginia

Solar Eclipse & Sounding Rocket Launch Viewing-

NASA Wallops Flight Facility Visitor Center

When: Monday, April 8th,  1 PM - 5 PM 

Where: NASA Wallops Flight Facility Visitor Center

Join the NASA Wallops Visitor Center on Monday, April 8, from 1-5 p.m. EDT, for an unforgettable view of the solar eclipse!

Experience the wonder of the next solar eclipse while safely observing three sounding rockets launch for the APEP-2 mission.

Dive into a variety of engaging solar-related activities throughout the visitor center.

Rain or shine, this event promises excitement for all.

At the NASA Wallops Visitor Center, witness the Moon blocking up to 81.4% of the Sun’s light.

Each segment of the solar eclipse will be marked by the launch of one sounding rocket, starting around 2:40 p.m. EDT and ending around 4:05 p.m. EDT, with approximately 45 minutes between each launch.


Solar Eclipse Timeline:

Start – 2:06 p.m. EDT

Maximum – 3:22 p.m. EDT

End – 4:34 p.m. EDT


For your safety, remember not to look directly at the Sun through optical devices, even with eclipse glasses or handheld solar viewers. Prepare for safe solar viewing by visiting NASA’s Eclipse Safety Page here.

Eclipse glasses and pinhole viewers will be available during the event while supplies last.


Please note that both solar eclipse viewing and rocket launch viewing are subject to clear skies.
