How important is sunscreen and why do I need it?

Sunscreen is critical in preventing skin from pre-mature aging not only in the summer but all year long.

Just because you are not out in the sun all day everyday does not mean you can skip the SPF. Damage can occur to your skin while driving, sitting by a window or even from your computer screen.

Reapplication is key every two hours and immediately after swimming or sweating for ideal protection. Daily use of a sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher can not only decrease signs of pre-mature aging such as wrinkles and sunspots but can also lower your risk of developing skin cancer.

According to the skin cancer foundation, your risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) decreases by 40% and your risk of developing melanoma decreases by 50% with regular daily use of sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or more.

What exactly is SPF?

It stands for sun protection factor. For example, if you use a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 and reapply as directed, it would take you 30 times longer to burn than if you didn’t use sunscreen.

Even if your skin doesn’t burn while in the sun, it doesn’t mean damage isn’t being caused. Did you know that 5 or more sunburns in your lifetime can double your risk of skin cancer?
